Mathematics – Core Level 3 Certificate In Mathematical Studies
Core Mathematics is a relatively new course for students who wish to maintain and develop valuable mathematical skills and can be studied alongside three other A Levels, complementing subjects including Science, Computer Science, Psychology, Business, Accounting and Economics. You will study analysis of data, mathematics for personal finance, estimation and critical analysis of given data. At the end of the one-year course, you will achieve a Level 3 qualification
Students studying three A Levels will be expected to have a minimum of two GCSEs at grade 6, English Language and Mathematics at grade 5 and the remaining GCSEs at grade 4 or above.
Core Maths has been designed to maintain and develop real-life skills. What you study is not purely theoretical or abstract; it can be applied on a day-to-day basis in work, study or life and most courses will include a financial maths element. It will also help with other A Level subjects – in particular with sciences, computer science, business studies, psychology and accounting. The skills developed in the study of mathematics are increasingly important in the workplace and in higher education; studying Core Maths will help you keep up these essential skills and give you a competitive advantage. On average, students who study maths after GCSE improve their career choices and increase their earning prospects.
This course is assessed by two exams at the end of the second year. One of the papers is on the compulsory content and the other is on statistical techniques. You will be given preliminary materials in advance of the examinations.
Enrichment and Work Experience
There is an opportunity to complete a one-week work placement in the summer term.
If you are studying a Science Subject, Computing, Business Studies, Economics, Accounting, Geography or Social Sciences, then this qualification will support your course.
Future Career Opportunities
Core Maths is a relatively new course and many universities have come out in strong support of it. Even subjects like history now recognise the importance of statistics and so a core maths qualification will help you hit the ground running at university. Employers from all different sectors
are also firmly behind the Core Maths qualification. Many roles in today’s workplace require high levels of budget management and problem-solving skills; Core Maths will be a useful tool in equipping you with these skills.
