Course Description

This course is an ideal addition to the programme of any driven and committed Level 3 learner. Alongside your complete Level 3 programme you have the chance to extend your mathematics skills beyond GCSE and gain an AS qualification which is recognised and sought after by universities and employers. Core Mathematics cleverly supports topics within the Sciences, Economics, Business, Accounting, Computing, Psychology and many more subjects.

Entry Requirements

Students studying three A Levels will be expected to have a minimum of two GCSEs at grade 6 and three GCSEs at grade 5/4, including English Language and Mathematics at grade 5/4 or above. Or eight GCSEs at a minimum of grade 5.

Features of the Course

Core Mathematics has been designed to maintain and develop real-life skills. What you study is not purely theoretical or abstract; it can be applied on a day-to-day basis in work, study or life and most courses will include a financial maths element. It will also help with other A Level subjects, in particular with Science subjects, Computer Science, Business, Psychology, Accounting and Economics. The skills developed in the study of mathematics are increasingly important in the workplace and in higher education; studying Core Mathematics will help you keep up these essential skills and give you a competitive advantage. On average, students who study maths after GCSE improve their career choices and increase their earnings prospects.

Assessment

This course is assessed by two exams at the end of the year.
Paper 1: Compulsory content
Paper 2: Statistical techniques

Enrichment and Work Experience

There is an expectation to complete a one-week work placement in the Summer term.
