BLACK HISTORY MONTH AT B6

Black History Month, which celebrates the achievements of Black Britons, has been marked in the UK every October since 1987 and our teachers and students have been marking this in many of their lessons and around the wider College this month.

Black History Month in Sociology

In Sociology the students have been taking part in civil rights quizzes using Kahoot and completing profiles of famous sociologists from BAME backgrounds including Heidi Safia Mirza, Professorial Research Fellow of Race, Faith and Culture at Goldsmith’s College, University of London and Professor Paul Gilroy, The founding director of The UCL Sarah Parker Remond Centre for the Study of Racism and Racialisation. 

The students also created some really thought-provoking posters on Ethnicity and Education with statistics that highlighted inequalities in the education system for students from a minority background. They then presented their findings to the rest of group.

Black History Month in History

History Club have also been exploring the themes of Black History Month as part of their enrichment. The group have been discussing and researching black civil rights in USA and have worked together to create a timeline of key events in the civil rights movement.

Black History Month in Maths

The maths students have been learning about Dr Gladys West who was born in 1930 in Virginia and whose accomplishments, whilst working at a Naval base in Virginia, laid the groundwork for the invention of one of the most indispensable technological wonder of the modern world, the global positioning system (GPS).

Black History Month in Art & Design

One of our first-year A Level Photography students has also been exploring Black History whilst on a trip to Manchester. Charlotte, a former Lowry Academy student also studies A Level History and Sociology. The purpose of the trip was to capture imagery using the theme of ‘A Different View’ and she chose to consider black history in art.
