As part of their Government and Protective Services unit, the BTEC Extended Diploma Public Services students had the privilege of having tea with the Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Linda Thomas and her Consort, Mr. Thomas at the Mayor’s parlour in the Town Hall.

Students had the opportunity to discuss the Mayor’s civic role and duties, local government public service and gained insights into what it means to be public servants in different ways, ranging from service in elected office through to the work of charities, organisations, and uniformed services such as police, fire and rescue, and the military, as well as social services and adult social care.

Students were given an in-depth tour of the Mayor’s Parlour and meeting rooms, in addition to a tour of the Town Hall and Albert Hall rooms with access to the Council Chamber where Councillors debate and vote on policy.

Students enjoyed finding out more about the vital work of local authority, being able to ask questions at the heart of the town’s democracy and seeing items of heritage and ceremony up close.

Thank you to the Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Linda Thomas and Consort, Mr. Thomas for their time and hospitality, this was a wonderful experience for our students.
