Our A-level Textiles course gives you the chance to explore the world of fashion, interiors and surface design while developing your own unique creative voice. If you're in Year 11 and love design, craft or fashion - this is the perfect next step!
Students studying three A Levels and/or AAQs will be expected to have a minimum of two GCSEs at grade 5 and three at grade 4, including English Language, Mathematics and Art. Those who have not studied Art at GCSE will be asked to bring samples of thier work so that the best advice can be offered. Students will be invited on campus for a skills assessment.

Studying A-level Textiles Design offers an exciting opportunity to explore a diverse range of textile media, processes, and techniques within a dynamic and professional environment. Taught by subject specialists, this industry-led course introduces students to both traditional and contemporary textile practices, encouraging creativity and innovation through live briefs and real-world design challenges. As a 100% sustainable textiles, fashion, and surface pattern course, sustainability is embedded in every aspect of learning and production.
Working in a professional studio equipped with industry-standard facilities, students gain hands-on experience across multiple specialisms, including fashion and costume design, digital and printed textiles, interior and constructed textiles, domestic textiles and wallpaper, art textiles, and installation pieces. Learners are encouraged to experiment with overlapping disciplines, developing a distinctive creative voice and a strong foundation for progression into higher education or careers in the ever-evolving textiles and fashion industries. Students are expected to stay informed about current trends and contemporary practice by engaging in independent research — visiting galleries and exhibitions, listening to relevant podcasts, and watching YouTube content or television documentaries.
In the Art Department, we believe that everyone has the potential to be creative in a personal and meaningful way. To develop your skills and ideas fully, you should be enthusiastic about creating work regularly and committed to producing images each week, dedicating at least 4.5 hours (or more) to independent study outside of your timetabled lessons.
Component one: Personal Investigation (60% of final grade) throughout the first year and into December of the second year.
Component two: Externally set assignment (40% of final grade) runs from February to May of your second year.
Both components are internally assessed and externally moderated. You will also present a portfolio and an exhibition of your work covering both components which is internally assessed and externally moderated.

This course provides a clear progression pathway to higher education, including the BA (Hons) Commercial Surface Design at The University of Greater Manchester, as well as a wide range of creative careers in fashion, textiles, interiors and product design.
To support your studies, you will be required to purchase relevant materials as the course develops, most are readily available from reputable art supply shops and/or from ourselves. Please note this is a consumable subject, students will have to pay for specialist media and materials throughout their time here.
