Science (Applied) AAQ

Course overview

Do you enjoy learning science in a practical way? Do you have a particular interest in applications of science in medicine and clinical work? This course is designed to provide a specialised work related qualification that covers biology, chemistry and physics. If you work best through practical investigations and how science affects the world, you should consider this course. An ability to carry out and analyse scientific work are skills highly respected by employers and universities.

Entry requirements

Students studying three A Levels and/or AAQs will be expected to have a minimum of two GCSEs at grade 5 and three at grade 4, including English Language and Mathematics.

Students intending to study an AAQ in Science will be expected to have a minimum of one GCSE grade 5 and one grade 4 in two single Science subjects, or a minimum of 5/4 in Combined Science

Topics you will study

Topics you will study include:

Year 1:

• Principles and Applications of Science I – Biology

• Principles and Applications of Science I – Chemistry

• Principles and Applications of Science I – Physics

Year 2:

• Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques

• Science Investigation Skills

Key features

AAQ (new BTEC) Applied Science is equivalent to one A level. The course covers a variety of scientific modules including: the basics topics of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, practical techniques, laboratory skills, scientific investigations and analysing scientific data. The course is composed of both internally assessed units (coursework) and externally assessed units (examination) in both Year 12 and Year 13.

Assessment

There are five units of study. Three of the units consist of externally assessed examinations (Biology/Chemistry/Physics). The remaining units are assessed through assignment work.

Exam Board: Pearson

Enrichment and Work Experience

There will be relevant visits and guest speakers from industry as well as demonstrations to enhance learning on the course.

Why choose B6?

If you love science and want to see how it’s used in the real world, Applied Science AAQ Level 3 is a great choice. At our Sixth Form you’ll study biology, chemistry and physics through practical experiments and projects that make the science come alive. You’ll develop the skills and confidence you need for university and future careers, all while learning in a supportive environment that helps you succeed.

Future career opportunities

The mix of biology, chemistry and physics gives you the skills needed for careers in laboratories, environmental science, forensics, healthcare, and engineering. It’s also a great stepping stone to university or higher apprenticeships in areas like biomedical science, chemical engineering, or pharmaceutical research.

Additional information

The AAQ (new BTEC) Applied Science course is recognised by a large number of universities. Many AAQ (previously BTEC) students go to study for degrees in areas such as science, bio-veterinary science, nursing and education. It can lead to careers in healthcare, medical sciences, community work, forensics and many other fields.
