Course overview

The Pearson Level 3 AAQ BTEC National in Information Technology (Extended Certificate) is a modern, future-focused qualification that equips you with essential digital knowledge and practical IT skills. You will learn how IT systems work, how to protect them from cyber threats, and how to design and build websites and databases. The course combines theoretical understanding with hands-on project work, preparing you for higher education or employment in the digital sector

Entry requirements

Students studying three A Levels and/or AAQs will be expected to have a minimum of two GCSEs at grade 5 and three at grade 4, including English Language and Mathematics.

Students studying four A Levels will be expected to have a minimum of six GCSEs at grade 7, 8 or 9 including English Language and Mathematics at grade 6 or above.

Topics you will study
  • Information Technology Systems – hardware, software, and their impact.

  • Cyber Security and Incident Management – threats, vulnerabilities, and responding to attacks.

  • Website Development – design, build and test websites for specific purposes.

  • Relational Database Development – data structures, database management systems, and relational design

Key features
  • Equivalent to 1 A Level – can be studied alongside A Levels.

  • Two external exams

  • Two Pearson-set coursework projects.

  • Strong emphasis on transferable skills such as problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication.

  • Aligned to higher education and future careers in the digital and IT sector

Assessment
  • Unit 1: IT Systems – external exam (90 marks).

  • Unit 2: Cyber Security – external exam (90 marks).

  • Unit 3: Website Development – internally assessed project.

  • Unit 4: Relational Database Development – internally assessed project.

  • External assessments are available twice a year (January and June)

  • Students will be encouraged to:

  • Take part in digital workshops.

  • Engage in real client-style briefs for web and database projects.

  • Complete employer linked work related projects in IT-related industries.
