Second-year student, Alani Dumbuya, had a fantastic summer competing in shot put in the UK and in Finland. Alani, a former Westhoughton High School student has taken part in athletics since she was eight and joined Leigh Harriers Athletics Club when she was 11. She studies A level Biology, Physical Education and Psychology at The Sixth Form Bolton.

Alani began the summer by competing in the English Schools Championships for team Greater Manchester and coming first with a throw of 14.64m. She then competed in the Under 20 England Championships in Birmingham where she took the gold and achieved an amazing Personal Best of 14.93m.

Her success in Birmingham took Alani to Tampere in Finland for the European Athletics U20 Championships. Alani joined the 58 athlete-strong Great Britain and Northern Ireland U20 team and represented her country in the shot put.

Alani is in her final year at The Sixth Form and plans to study Psychology or Neuroscience at university, all while maintaining her athletic pursuits. Next year, she hopes to compete in the World Athletics U20 Championships in Oregon, USA, and we wish her the best of luck in qualifying.

Jill Errington, Senior Leader and Head of Sport & Public Services at The Sixth Form said:

“We’re incredibly proud of everything Alani achieved this summer. Her hard work has paid off, and she deserves every bit of her success. We can’t wait to see what this year holds for her.”
