Two members of staff from The Sixth Form Bolton have recently smashed their fundraising targets to raise over £1600 for Dementia UK.

Nick Fisher, Teacher of Public Services & Student Leadership Co-ordinator and Andy Howard, Progress Coach, challenged themselves to run a 5k every day in August. They also stretched themselves further by running up to 30k on the Sundays.

Andy Howard said:

“We talked about completing a charity challenge and we wanted a challenge that would push us. We both enjoy running, being consistent and pushing for longer distances, so 5K each day seemed like a good challenge. We added the extra distance on Sunday to give it more of an edge.”

Dementia Uk (https://www.dementiauk.org/), who they are fundraising for is the specialist dementia nurse charity. Their nurses, called Admiral Nurses – who they continually support and develop – provide life-changing care for families affected by all forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease.

Andy said:

“We decided to raise money for Dementia UK because dementia has affected our lives in different ways. It's something we've spoken about before and something that our family and friends have also dealt with in various ways.”

Nick was delighted with how the fundraiser went saying:

“Taking part in my Dementia UK runs meant so much to me, as someone in my family has dementia and I wanted to do something to help. At first, I didn’t know what to do, but after speaking to Andy, we decided to take on the challenge of running 5k every day for Dementia UK. On Saturdays, we joined local parkruns in fancy dress to make it even more fun and raise awareness, and on Sundays we pushed ourselves further, running 10k, 15k, 20k, 25k and finally 30k – though in the end, we actually managed 36k. Over 31 days, we raised more than £1,600, and we are absolutely over the moon with that achievement.”

Joanna Sullivan, Deputy Director of Fundraising at Dementia UK said:

“We are so grateful to Andy and Nick for taking on this challenge for Dementia UK. One in two of us will be affected by dementia in our lifetime - either by caring for someone with the condition, developing it ourselves, or both. It can be exhausting and overwhelming, not only for the person with dementia, but also for the people caring for them, and their wider family and friends. Thanks to the hard work of amazing fundraisers like Andy and Nick, more families than ever will be able to access the life-changing support offered by our Admiral Nurses.”
