Last week, five students from The Sixth Form Bolton were delighted to visit Asda Headquarters in Leeds to present their trailblazing ideas, from the Asda Leaders scheme, to the board.

The Asda Leaders scheme is aimed at students in year 12 who have an interest in business and who have the aspiration of becoming a future leader within the retail sector. It prompts students to solve a real-life business problem relating to an industry-wide EDI and sustainability issue as part of a “Dragons Den” style presentation. During the year, the students were mentored by Asda colleagues and attended Asda-led events to gain insight into different business functions, participate in mock assessments and enjoy employability experiences. They competed with a number of other teams from different colleges and sixth forms, nationally, and were delighted to be crowned as the winners.

The students’ proposal was to invest more into EV charging infrastructure across Asda stores, incentivising shoppers via the ASDA loyalty cars to 'charge while they shop' and therefore attracting more shoppers into the store and increasing Asda's share of the market.

The group visited Asda House last week to present their business solution to Asda’S EV working group who were all very impressed with the students’ presentation and the hard work, professionalism and passion that shone through.

Asda’s Senior Director for Estates & Acquistions, Geri Hebberd, commented about the group:

"They did a fantastic job, and it was great to see them present their ideas so confidently."

Sarah Steel, Early Careers Specialist (School Engagement) was also impressed, saying:

“The group delivered a pitch that showed fantastic research, a passion for sustainability, and a customer focussed solution. Well done to the students for your hard work, professionalism, and passion.”

Following their presentation, the group were then invited to take part in some mock assessment centre activities giving them an insight into recruitment techniques of corporate organisations.

The students all found the experience hugely rewarding with second-year Triple Level 3 Applied Science student, Amir Baruchi saying:

“Winning the Asda Future Leader programme was an unforgettable experience that pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow in confidence, teamwork, and resilience. Presenting in front of senior management was both nerve-wracking and exhilarating, and overcoming those challenges made our victory even sweeter. A huge thank you to Sarah Steel for giving us the chance to be part of such an inspiring competition, and to Jill Whitham for her incredible support throughout the journey. With opportunities like this, the future of ASDA is looking green, bright, and unstoppable.”

A huge well done to all the students who took part: you were fantastic ambassadors for The Sixth Form and we look forward to following your success.
