Everyone at The Sixth Form Bolton was over the moon to find out that their student, Luka Goulding, won both Best Film and the Director’s Prize at the Steel to Reel College Film Competition led by the Film + FX Department at the University of Greater Manchester and held as part of the Bolton Film Festival.
Launched by the University of Greater Manchester, the College Film Competition brought together aspiring filmmakers from colleges across the country. Students showcased their films on the big screen at the Bolton International Film Festival, sharing their stories with new audiences and celebrating their passion for filmmaking. The event featured a wide range of creative films from emerging young talent.
Luka, a former Woodhey High School student, won the awards for his film: Lady In The Moon, which explores dreams, memories and lost love. Luka’s award was presented by Nick Dudman, Oscar-nominated make-up effect and animatronic artist renowned for creating Jack Nicholson’s Joker make-up in Batman.

Luka was delighted to receive the recognition, saying:
“The process of making this film to bring to life a story has been extremely challenging and rewarding. It’s been enjoyable to explore my imagination throughout. I’m grateful to see the results have been recognised beyond my A-Level course. I really appreciated all the support from those involved but in particular my Film Studies teacher, Chris Hepworth, for inspiring a passion for the art of cinema in me from the start.”
Chris Hepworth, Course Leader for Film and Media at The Sixth Form Bolton, was thrilled for Luka, saying:
“I am immensely proud of the exceptional short film that Luka made and of the recognition he received at the Steel to Reel Awards. Thank you to Laurence Davey at the University of Greater Manchester for organising this event. As the screenwriter, director and composer of original music, Luka surpassed expectations with a mature and complex film that explores dreams, memories and lost love, with rich references to German Expressionism, surrealist cinema and film noir. What a film!”
Huge congratulations to Luka. We can’t wait to follow his journey in filmmaking.
