A second-year student at The Sixth Form Bolton is preparing to publish his first comic book.

Zinedin Turki, a former Sharples School student, is currently studying A Level Biology, Chemistry and Psychology. His dream of publishing a comic book began to become a reality when he discovered The Agency Bolton, a programme aimed at empowering young people to become creative leaders and changemakers within their communities.

The Agency of Change is a national charity that champions creativity as a catalyst for leadership, opportunity and systemic change. As part of its Bolton programme, which is delivered by The Octagon Theatre, young people in Farnworth were invited to develop creative ideas and present them to a panel in a bid for funding of up to £2,000. A total of 18 young people competed, with Zinedin’s idea successfully securing funding.

Zinedin’s comic, ‘Soft Borders’, explores themes of cultural segregation and diversity. Set in a fictional world divided by government-controlled walls, the story follows a main character determined to discover what lies beyond them.

To bring his vision to life, illustration students from the University of Greater Manchester collaborated with Zinedin. After developing a vision board and script, he worked closely with the students, each contributing artwork to different sections of the comic.

Zinedin said:

“I was so excited to secure the grant to get my work published. It’s been great working with the University of Greater Manchester’s Illustration students, and I’m grateful to them for everything they’ve done. I’ve always loved comic book creation and think it’s a great way to communicate important stories to young people. Although I study science subjects at The Sixth Form, it’s been great to have a creative outlet as well. Everyone at my sixth form has been really supportive, and my Progress Coach, Andy Howard, has been especially encouraging. I’d like to thank everyone at The Agency of Change and The Octagon for their support. I’m really excited to share my finished comic at the launch on Friday 22 May.”

Everyone at The Sixth Form Bolton wishes Zinedin the best of luck with his book and looks forward to seeing the finished product.
