The Sixth Form Bolton Champions Sustainable Travel with Active Travel Day

The Sixth Form Bolton recently partnered with Bolton Council and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) to deliver a highly successful Active Travel Day, an event designed to raise awareness of sustainable travel and encourage students to walk or cycle to college.

The event was developed and delivered by our Sport and PE students as part of their Live Brief project, giving them hands‑on experience in planning, promoting and running a real community‑focused initiative. Held in the Sixth Form Hall from 10am to 1pm, the event attracted strong engagement from students across the campus.

  • Active Travel Day featured a range of interactive challenges and activities, including:

  • Cycle Challenge – How far could students cycle in one minute

  • Step Challenge – Show evidence of walking over 5,000 steps that day

  • Bolton Scavenger Hunt – A selfie challenge across six iconic town‑centre landmarks, including the historic Bolton Library and the Fred Dibnah statue

  • Participants had the chance to win prizes such as headphones and shopping vouchers, adding a competitive edge to the day.

Representatives from Bolton Council were also on hand to promote road safety, active lifestyles and the wider benefits of sustainable travel. Their presence helped reinforce the importance of walking and cycling for both personal wellbeing and environmental impact.

Local data highlights the significance of events like this. According to TfGM, around 30% of all journeys in Greater Manchester are under 1km, a distance that can be walked in around 10 minutes. Increasing active travel not only reduces congestion and carbon emissions but also supports better physical and mental health for young people.

Neil Hart from Bolton Council said:

“Following presentations and a dragon’s den style pitch from the students, I feel the staff and students delivered a fantastic event showcasing Active Travel and its many benefits to the Sixth Form community. It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm in the room on the day, taking part in the challenges, reviewing their daily journey into college and beyond, and listening to the partners in the room. There really were some thought-provoking moments that the students took away with them, hopefully into a safer and more active lifestyle. Well done to the organising group in planning and delivering a fantastic event.”

Jill Errington, Head of Sport and Public Services at The Sixth Form Bolton said:

“This has been a great opportunity for our students to work together on something practical and relevant to their everyday lives. They’ve done a really good job of creating an event that feels accessible and engaging for their peers. It’s been encouraging to see students getting involved in the activities and thinking a bit more about their daily travel habits. The project has also given those involved valuable experience that they can take forward beyond the classroom.”

Active Travel Day reflects The Sixth Form Bolton’s ongoing commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles, sustainability and community engagement. The Sixth Form is proud of the Sport and PE students who led the event and looks forward to continuing its work with local partners to support greener travel choices across Bolton.
