Last month, a group of students from The Sixth Form Bolton graduated from Addleshaw Goddard’s Law Society programme.

The Law Society is a four-month, multi-session programme designed to introduce second-year students to a range of professionals within the legal sector. It also provides opportunities to take part in work-based projects and connect with like-minded peers. In total, 29 students took part in the cohort, with eight representing The Sixth Form Bolton.

During the programme, students had the opportunity to network with over 30 professionals from across Addleshaw Goddard, gaining valuable insight into the legal sector. They developed a clearer understanding of the wide range of roles within law, as well as the different pathways individuals take to reach them.

Alongside this, they built key skills including communication, teamwork, time management, public speaking and project planning. Their learning was supported by practical experiences, including a visit to Manchester Magistrates’ Court to observe proceedings first-hand, and a mock trial led by a former barrister and current solicitor.

Students also worked in teams to present ideas for social media campaigns and app concepts to a panel of senior colleagues and clients, giving them the opportunity to apply their skills in a professional setting.

The students spoke positively about their experience. Lacey-lei Wrightson, a former Co-op Academy Swinton student, commented:

“It offered a valuable opportunity to gain first-hand insight into a leading international law firm and the legal profession. I was particularly interested in the firm’s innovative approach, strong client focus, and commitment to widening access to careers in law. During the experience, I developed a clearer understanding of how a commercial law firm operates and the key skills required, including communication, teamwork, attention to detail and commercial awareness. The most valuable aspect was engaging with legal professionals, learning about their career journeys, and taking part in practical activities that showed how teams solve real business challenges. Overall, the experience strengthened my understanding of the profession, helped me build confidence and key skills, and confirmed my motivation to pursue a career in law.”

Aysha Idrees, a former Turton School student, said:

“I applied to the programme to strengthen my CV and gain a better understanding of how a professional workplace operates. The highlight for me was the mock trial, as it gave me a real insight into the legal process and what it’s like to present a case. I hope to become a barrister in the future, and having the opportunity to network with practising barristers helped me understand the steps I need to take to achieve that goal.”

Afifat Ismaila, a former Sharples School student, also reflected positively on the programme:

“I chose to take part in the Addleshaw Goddard programme to gain insight into the legal profession and better understand the different career pathways available. It also gave me the opportunity to build my confidence and develop important professional skills. The highlight was taking part in the interactive activities and meeting legal professionals. Overall, the experience has given me a clearer idea of what a career in law involves and will support my future plans.”

Rosa Alexander, Senior Programme Manager, said:

“The students have pushed themselves to aim higher and set goals that reflect their abilities. We are incredibly proud of this cohort — they have shown confidence, ambition and a willingness to step forward, setting a strong example for others. They should be proud of how well they have represented The Sixth Form. Several students were also recognised with awards at the final session, celebrating the impact they have made throughout the programme.”

A huge congratulations to all of the students who took part, and thank you to everyone involved in delivering the programme.
